Welcome to Cherry Brook
At Widecombe-in-the-Moor Primary School, our Early Years Foundation Stage classroom, Cherry Brook, is a nurturing, creative space where children begin their journey as curious, confident, and independent learners. Rooted in our school values of Collaboration, Courage, and Creativity, we are committed to providing a rich, inclusive, and ambitious start to every child’s education.
Our Vision
We aim to build strong foundations for lifelong learning by offering a curriculum that is meaningful, progressive, and responsive to the needs of our children. We believe that every child deserves to feel safe, valued, and empowered to explore the world around them.
Our Values in Action
- Collaboration: We work in partnership with families, children, and the wider community. Children learn to listen, share, and support one another in a culture of mutual respect.
- Courage: We encourage children to take risks in their learning, try new experiences, and persevere through challenges with resilience and pride.
- Creativity: We provide opportunities for imaginative play, problem-solving, and expressive arts, enabling children to think critically and inventively.
Our Local Area is a Learning Resource.Situated in the heart of Dartmoor, we make full use of our unique environment; from moorland walks and forest school sessions to village visits and community events—to inspire awe, wonder, and a deep connection to nature. These experiences help children develop a sense of place, environmental responsibility, and develop an appreciation and understanding for the world around them.
What does our classroom look and sound like?
- Children playing and exploring: showing curiosity, engaging with natural materials, and confidently investigating their environment.
- Children actively learning: showing focus, persistence, and joy in their achievements.
- Children creating and thinking critically: making connections, solving problems, and expressing their ideas in unique ways.
- Adults modelling language, extending thinking, and supporting emotional regulation through sensitive, attuned interactions.
- A curriculum that is language-rich, sequenced, and inclusive, with a strong focus on early communication, literacy, and numeracy.
- A learning environment that reflects the local landscape, celebrates children’s interests, and promotes independence and challenge.
- A classroom culture where children feel safe, respected, and part of something bigger—their class, their school, and their community.
Our Commitment
We believe that every child can succeed when they are known, nurtured, and challenged. Our EYFS team is dedicated to ensuring that all children—regardless of background—have the opportunity to thrive. We are building a foundation where children grow into lifelong learners, ready to embrace the world with curiosity, courage, and creativity.
