The scheme follows a proven progression and research has found that children have made significantly more progress in reading than those not following the scheme. Not only has Bug Club been found to be successful academically for children, but it has also been shown to increase positive attitudes to reading and a great motivator for reluctant readers, boosting children’s confidence and enjoyment of reading right at the beginning of their reading journey.
Our teachers implement a multi-sensory approach in the teaching and learning of phonics which enables the children to learn from visual, audio and kinaesthetic activities. Throughout the programme, teachers supplement the provided materials and embed the taught skills through a range of activities that they have identified to be successful. This helps to secure essential phonic knowledge and skills as well as ensuring the lessons are fun, interactive and engaging. We continually assess and track children's understanding of key skills and retention of sounds and words. We work closely as a staff team to ensure that any misconceptions and gaps are addressed quickly so children feel confident and fluent.
We value the collaborative approach between home and school when teaching early reading and building confidence and fluency to inspire a love of reading for all our children. We hold termly Phonics workshops in Reception and Year 1 to empower parents with the right skills and knowledge to support their childrens learning journey. We ensure that we have robust communication between home and school regarding what sounds the children are learning this is in the form of reading records, videos on see saw home labels, mini phonics home books and workshops. Children have their own Bug Club platform with games and ebooks for them to access at home and books matched to the progression of learning which they are supported to read regularly with an adult at home and at school.
