PSHE and British Values

Intent

Our PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) curriculum is central to developing the whole child. We aim to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to become confident, independent, healthy and responsible members of society.

We intend for children to:

  • Develop emotional literacy, resilience, and positive mental health
  • Understand relationships, diversity and respect for others in a modern, changing society
  • Build a strong sense of self-worth, responsibility and citizenship, including British values
  • Acquire a rich and ambitious vocabulary to help them articulate thoughts, feelings and ideas
  • Be prepared for life beyond primary school with the knowledge to make safe, informed choices

Implementation

PSHE is taught weekly using the Jigsaw programme, which provides a structured, progressive and age-appropriate curriculum that meets all statutory requirements.

Our approach includes:

  • A whole-school theme each half term (e.g. Being Me in My World, Healthy Me, Relationships, Changing Me)
  • Progressive learning from EYFS to Year 6, ensuring knowledge and skills are revisited and deepened
  • Whole-school assemblies to introduce themes and create a shared focus
  • A strong emphasis on discussion, oracy and reflection, allowing children to apply learning to real-life situations
  • Integration of RSE, mental health, online safety and British values throughout the curriculum
  • Enrichment through national events (e.g. Anti-Bullying Week, Mental Health Week) and partnerships with external agencies
  • Opportunities for children to contribute to the wider community

Vocabulary is explicitly taught and embedded to support understanding across all areas of PSHE.

Impact

As a result of our PSHE curriculum, pupils:

  • Demonstrate confidence, resilience and emotional awareness
  • Show respect, empathy and understanding towards others
  • Make safe, healthy and responsible choices
  • Communicate effectively using a wide and appropriate vocabulary
  • Understand how to keep themselves safe (including online) and seek help when needed
  • Engage positively as active citizens within school and the wider community

Impact is measured through:

  • Ongoing teacher assessment using ‘I can’ statements and end-of-unit summaries
  • Pupil voice, discussions and reflection
  • Evidence in PSHE books, class work and observations
  • Monitoring by the PSHE lead through lesson visits, book scrutiny and staff feedback.

Overall, our pupils leave primary school as well-rounded, thoughtful individuals who are ready for the next stage of their education and life.
